Located on the Route des Vins d’Alsace, Hunawihr is one of the 158 most beautiful villages in France. On a hill above Hunawihr stands a fortified church from the 15th century surrounded by a rampart.
Hunawihr’s centuries-old connection to viticulture is reflected in the tower clock, the hands decorated with bunches of grapes. Inside the church you can admire 14 frescoes depicting the life of St. Nicholas.
Hunawihr gets its name from Huna; according to 7th century legend, Huna was married to Hunon and the couple lived in a Roman villa on the site where the church now stands.
Huna washed the clothes of sick people in the village fountain. Moreover, Huna turned the fountain’s water into wine in a year of poor harvest. Huna was canonized by Pope Leo X in 1520.
Just outside the village, you can visit the butterfly garden and a zoo dedicated to preserving local animals such as otters, beavers and storks.
Open from April to early January, Colmar ’s city campground is the perfect base for exploring Alsace.
