Riquewihr is one big open-air museum, with buildings dating back to the 15th century and surrounded by vineyards. Riquewihr is one of the 158 most beautiful villages in France.
The village is car-free, so exploring Riquewihr is done on foot. Outside the village is a large parking lot.
On busy days in the high season, thousands of people visit Riquewihr. If you want to avoid big crowds in the village, plan your visit in the morning and not on weekends.
In 1291 the town received permission to build city walls, from this year dates the city gate with the Dolder a 25-meter high tower. Today, the tower houses an antiquities museum.
In addition to the many souvenir shops, restaurants and hotels, you can of course visit the tasting rooms of Alsatian wineries. My favorite winery is Dopff & Irion, its tasting room can be found on Main Street. I really like the Gewurztraminer Les Sorcières with a piece of Munster cheese. A great campsite to explore Alsace is the city campsite of Colmar.
